Under the Merinids, Fes overthrew Marrakech as the capital of the kingdom and had its zenith in both the economic and cultural spheres in the 13th and 14th centuries. Even yet, Rabat became Morocco’s new governmental capital in 1919. Fes continues to be recognized as the nation’s hub for artisans.
